Fact 3: The Dessel–Turnhout–Schoten canal runs right past the village

Dug for the Kempen

The canal was built in the nineteenth century to open up the Kempen. Peat, sand, bricks and later building materials were shipped towards Antwerp and Turnhout. The water levels and bridges provided work and movement in the villages along the route.

Today: towpaths, cyclists and joggers

The towpaths have since become flat, car-free routes for cyclists, walkers and runners. You can go straight for kilometres in either direction without a single intersection. Combine it with the cycling nodes of the Antwerp Kempen and you can easily make a half-day trip of it.

A sandwich for the road

Cyclists riding along the canal from Schoten or Brecht often stop by our place. A sandwich, a coffee on the terrace, and back on their way. We open at 06:30, so even early riders don't have to leave on an empty stomach.
